Drill string components are subjected to high loads and heavy wear under harsh conditions. Analysis shows that significant costs are related to drill pipe failures in drilling operations, thust here is a great cost saving potential through proactive maintenance, optimized operations and improved logistics.

One operator company has performed analysis of 187 incidents in North West Europe, suggesting direct costs exceeding 150 million USD. Other studies have shown that drillstring failure occurs on 14-percent of all rigs and the resulting downtime costs roughly $106 000 per event. A survey of all drilling problems reported worldwide over a 15-month period showed that 36-percent were due to stuck pipe. Stuck pipe cost estimates for the worldwide drilling industry range as high as $250 million for this period. Furthermore, challenges related to tubular identification, tracking and quality control appear in all parts of the lifecycle .

Another source for incidents can be related to incorrect Drill pipe tally and depth uncertainty.
